Bringing Home a new Puppy

Bringing Home a new Puppy

I'm getting a new puppy! What do I need to do to make his transition into my home easier?

How exciting to bring a new puppy into the family! But no matter how exciting it is for you, remember that leaving the shelter or the breeder might be tough on your little guy.

Many puppies will cry or bark for the first few nights. As hard as it will be, owners need to let their puppy cry it out, and should not encourage the puppy to rely on his new parents for immediate emotional support during this time. It may take a few nights (or a few weeks) for your puppy to learn how to self-soothe, but once he does, he'll be a great addition to your family!

How can I help make my puppy's transition easier?

  • Plug in a Comfort Zone® Adaptil® Diffuser in the room where the puppy spends most of his time.
  • Take your puppy out to relieve himself as late as you can before you go to bed, and make this the first thing you do when you return from work, and wake up in the morning. If you don’t, your puppy will get into the habit of wetting or soiling in the house.
  • Try not to make too much fuss before leaving your puppy alone.
  • Consider using a covered crate. This can help nervous puppies feel more secure. Large open spaces may appear daunting and scary.
  • Work with your vet or a reputable dog trainer on behavior skills — starting them young will build a lifetime of good habits and happiness.

Comfort Zone® Adaptil® products contain a synthetic version of the natural comforting pheromone released by a mother dog to reassure her puppies and is a safe, great tool to help your puppy settle into his new home and help reduce night crying. Comfort Zone® Adaptil® products are clinically proven* to help reduce stress behaviors resulting from loud noises and new pet adoption. Comfort Zone® Adaptil® is used and recommended by veterinarians nationwide.
